SAFETY TIPS

New Zealand’s residential dwelling supply is aging along with its wiring systems. Wiring systems of older houses are not particularly well designed to handle increasing electrical demand and have often fallen short of today’s electrical safety standards.

The New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) maintains a database of the fire incidents
attended by their officers. The two most commonly known risks associated with electrical systems are electrical shocks and electrical fires. Faulty electrical distribution systems, loose or broken conductors, defective or worn insulation, not properly installed electrical appliances, heating and air conditioning systems yearly cause injures and result in thousands in property damage.

Electrical systems age and can become overloaded, particularly in older homes. Over the years as more lighting, appliances and equipment are added, the electrical system becomes overburdened and problems can develop. If fuses blow or circuit breakers protecting branch circuits trip frequently, new branch circuits or other repairs may be necessary. Depending on the condition of the equipment and the extent of the repairs, the cost may be nominal or could run into several thousand dollars.

A qualified licensed electrician can determine if repairs are necessary and can estimate the cost.

How can you help protect yourselves from electricity-related injuries?

  • Check outlets and extension cords to make sure they aren’t overloaded.
  • Examine electrical cords to make sure they aren’t frayed, damaged or placed under rugs or carpets.
  • Make sure that the proper wattage light bulbs are being used in light fixtures and lamps.
  • Always follow appropriate safety precautions and manufacturer’s instructions.
